Petropolis, also known as The Imperial City of Brazil, is a town in the state of Rio de Janeiro, about 40 miles from Rio de Janeiro City and located 720m (2,400 ft.) above sea level. The town’s name (“city of Peter”) honors Emperor Pedro II, the nation’s second monarch. The city was the summer residence of the Brazilian Emperors and aristocrats in the 19th century, and was the official capital of the state of Rio de Janeiro between 1894 and 1903. Situated in the historic center of Petrópolis, the Imperial Museum of Petrópolis was the former summer palace of the emperor Dom Pedro II. The most impressive room is D. Pedro’s gold crown ornated with pearls and diamonds, the scepter of gold with encrusted diamonds and some of the monarchy jewelry. There is the golden pen used by Princess Isabel to sign the Lei Aurea (Golden Law), which abolished slavery in Brazil on 1888.
Built in Neo-Gothic Style, from the North of France, constructed in 1884 by Dom Pedro II, in this church rests in peace the Emperor D. Pedro II and his wife Teresa Cristina buried on beautiful mausoleum made in Carrara marble.

For the Brazilians he was the first person to fly on a plane developed by himself. The house designed and planned by the inventor Alberto Santos Dumont to be his summer residence. The museum is a French-alpine style chalet with peculiarities as one of the last inventions by Santos Dumont: the hot water shower that had alcohol heating.
Inspired by the London Crystal Palace and Porto Cristal Palace. It was built in 1884. The initial intention was built it to serve as a birds and flowers exposition place. Nowadays it’s used as expositions and events place, as the Bauernfest, the annual party in tribute to the German colonists of Petrópolis.

Built in 1944 to be the biggest Casino hotel in Latin America. Its Normand style is present in the architecture of Petrópolis due to the German colonization. The interior is in Hollywood style.
