It is the result of the Pier’s urbanized area at the last century, grounded with 150 hectares (370 Acres) for the construction of the Pier. The Plaza represents the connection of the city into Pier and the harbor. Next to some of the main attractions as follows.

It houses the Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat. The Mannerist style church is a primary example of Brazilian colonial architecture. The Portuguese Igreja Candelaria is an important historical Roman Catholic church. It was built and decorated during a long period, from 1775 to the late 19th century. The church combines a Baroque façade with a Neoclassical and Neo-Renaissance interior elements. Built to be the Commercial Association Headquarters Office in 1906.The Dome housed the Public Funds Stock Exchange. By the twenties it became Banco do Brazil Headquarters Office. CCBB has three theaters, besides four video cabins, a cinema, two auditory, exposition room, tea salon and restaurant.
In this 1820 building there was a market square. It was the most important work of the renowned French architect Grandjean de Montigny. It has a huge vaulted internal space and is inspired by the Roman civic basilicas. After a careful remodeling in the 80’s its originality still remains. Currently it is an important arts show venue.
The temple dates back to a small oratory erected in 1743 by merchants and residents of the area.

This stylish eclectic building from 1926 was the Brazilian National Parliament. Today offers visitors a multimedia exhibition Titled: Tiradentes Palace: place of memory of the Legislative Branch.
The Old Cathedral. It was the episcopal seat of the Archdiocese of San Sebastianof Rio de Janeiro until 1976, when the new Cathedral of San Sebastian of Rio de Janeiro was completed. As a royal chapel, was the scene of important events, such as the coronation of King John VI as king of Portugal after the death of D. Maria I in 1816.
In 1789, a new fountain was built on the edge of the new pier by Master Valentin, The new location of the fountain enabled a more adequate space for the military maneuvers carried out in the square and for a “watering-down” of the ships brought on the pier.

Opera House built in the beginning of the 20th century. Inspired by the Paris Opera House, built by architect Francisco de Oliveira Passos. Capacity : 1739 People. It is the main stage for the classical music and ballets presentation in town. Considered the nicest in South America.
An old monastery was knocked down to give place to this French Beaux-Arts Style Square. Surrounded by famous buildings in art deco, art nouveau and eclectic styles such as Fine Arts Museum, National Library, Pedro Ernesto Palace, Municipal Theatre and the Justice Palace. The name Cine of Cinelandia comes from many Cinemas that could be found there.
Rio’s old Carioca Aqueduct know Lapa Arches. It was built in the middle of 18th century to bring fresh water to the population of Rio. Since the end of the 19th century the aqueduct serves as a bridge for a popular tram. In the neighborhood under it, the night action of Rio takes place.
